on vancouver island, b.c., where i live there are snails almost like this. ours don't have the little flare just before the body starts. i have always thought of them as eyes, same as slugs. i should look it up. i do know that at the end of the antenna they have a little drop of moisture with tiny mites in it and when the drop touches things the mites have a new home.
